End of 3G in Switzerland: Get your phones ready
Swiss operators put an end to 3G :
- Sunrise: already deactivated
- Salt: deactivation in progress
- Swisscom: definitive end on 31 December 2025
At MaxiConnect, we use the Swisscom and Salt networks, so our customers are directly affected.
WHAT'S CHANGING
Don't worry: 4G and 5G are still available for mobile internet.
On the other hand, 3G was still used for calls and text messages. With its disappearance, calls will now be made using a technology called VoLTE.
WHAT IS VOLTE?
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) literally means "Voice over 4G".
It's a technology that allows you to :
- make calls directly via the 4G network, without switching back to 3G,
- enjoy better audio quality
- make calls more quickly
- continue to use the 4G internet during a call (browsing, email, etc.).
👉 Without VoLTE activated, you'll still have access to 4G/5G for internet, but you won't be able to make calls or send text messages in Switzerland.
HOW TO PREPARE?
Check that your smartphone is VoLTE compatible (all recent models are).
Activate VoLTE in the settings:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular Data → Options → Activate VoLTE
- Android: Settings → Mobile Network → VoLTE Calls (path may vary depending on model)
Restart your device to apply the change.
IN SUMMARY
- Sunrise: 3G already switched off
- Salt: deactivation in progress
- Swisscom: scheduled to end on 31.12.2025
- 4G and 5G remain available
- VoLTE becomes mandatory to continue calling and texting
At MaxiConnect, we are helping our customers to make this transition seamless.
