SFP, fibre optic and XGS-PON: understanding your connection

SFP module, GPON, XGS-PON — these technical terms directly affect the quality of your fibre connection. MaxiConnect breaks down the essentials in plain language, no jargon required.

Fibre optic has become the standard for high-performance internet connections in Switzerland. But behind the technical terms — SFP, GPON, XGS-PON — lies a concrete reality that directly influences the quality of your connection. Here is what you need to know.

What is an SFP module?

SFP stands for Small Form-factor Pluggable. It is a small pluggable module that slots into your router or switch to allow it to connect to the fibre optic network. It acts as a converter between the light signal of the fibre and the electrical signal that your network equipment understands.

Why does this matter to you? If your operator or technician mentions an “SFP”, they are referring to this small component that links your equipment to the fibre network. The quality of the SFP module can influence the stability of your connection.

GPON vs XGS-PON: what is the difference?

These two acronyms refer to two generations of fibre optic technology:

GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network)

  • The most widespread fibre technology currently in Switzerland
  • Theoretical speeds: up to 2.5 Gbps download and 1.25 Gbps upload
  • Shared between multiple subscribers on the same network segment

XGS-PON (10 Gigabit Symmetrical PON)

  • The new generation, being progressively deployed
  • Theoretical speeds: up to 10 Gbps symmetrical (download AND upload)
  • Ideal for businesses with significant upload requirements (video conferencing, cloud backups, large file transfers)

What MaxiConnect offers

MaxiConnect supports both technologies depending on what is available in your area. Our technicians configure the hardware suited to your installation to guarantee the best possible performance.

If you are unsure which technology is used at your premises, or if you would like to upgrade to a faster connection, contact us — we will advise you on the best option.

Choosing the right router

Not all routers are compatible with all technologies. If you manage your own equipment, check that your router has an SFP port compatible with your connection technology (GPON or XGS-PON).

MaxiConnect offers and configures compatible routers — Fritz!, Zyxel, Ubiquiti — suited to every type of installation.
