Switching operator in Switzerland: NSN, SIP and portability

Thinking about switching operator but unsure about number portability, SIP compatibility or NSN? MaxiConnect answers the most common technical questions before you make the move.

You are thinking about switching operator but something is holding you back? Technical concerns are among the most common barriers — and are often unfounded. Here are the questions our new customers ask most frequently.

”Will I lose my phone number?”

No. Number portability is a legal right in Switzerland. You can keep your number regardless of which operator you switch to.

How does it work? When you make a porting request with MaxiConnect, we manage the entire procedure. You fill in a form, and we take care of the rest. The number is transferred generally within a few business days, with no significant service interruption.

NSN (Number Service Number): This is the technical identifier for your current number with your operator. It allows us to locate your line to initiate the transfer. You do not need to look it up yourself — your current operator is required to provide it on request, and it often appears on your invoice.

”Is my telephone exchange (IPBX) compatible?”

If you use a business telephone exchange — physical or hosted — the question of SIP compatibility arises.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the universal standard for IP telephony. The vast majority of modern telephone exchanges (Cisco, Yealink, Fanvil, Grandstream, PBXware, 3CX…) are SIP-compatible.

MaxiConnect uses the standard SIP protocol. If your equipment is SIP-compatible, it will work with our lines. If in doubt, our technical team can assess compatibility before migration.

”Will the switch disrupt my business?”

A well-planned migration does not disrupt your business. At MaxiConnect:

  1. Preliminary analysis: we assess your current configuration
  2. Migration plan: we define together the date and process
  3. Staged migration possible for multi-site businesses
  4. Dedicated support during and after the migration

The majority of our business migrations are completed without service interruption.

”Will my current operator make things difficult?”

Legally, your current operator cannot block your departure or impose disproportionate obstacles. If they try to retain you with last-minute offers, you are free to accept or decline.

If you encounter difficulties during the porting process, MaxiConnect will assist you with the necessary steps.

”I’m under a fixed-term contract?”

If you have a fixed-term contract, cancellation penalties may apply with your current operator. In some cases, it may be worth waiting until the contract ends. But sometimes the savings made with MaxiConnect more than offset the penalties.

Our team can help you do the calculation.
