Fibre optics in Switzerland: two generations
Switzerland’s fibre infrastructure uses two main technologies, often identified by their SFP module type: BX (GPON) and XGS-PON. Both technologies use the same physical fibre cable, but different equipment at each end.
GPON / BX — The established technology
GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) is the fibre technology that has equipped the majority of Swiss homes since the 2010s.
| Characteristic | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum download speed | 2.5 Gbps (shared) |
| Maximum upload speed | 1.25 Gbps (shared) |
| Sharing | Up to 64 subscribers |
| Practical speed | 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps |
| Status | In service, progressively migrated |
The SFP module used is called BX (bidirectional on a single fibre), hence the common name “BX fibre”.
XGS-PON — The next generation
XGS-PON (10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) is the next-generation technology, being progressively deployed across Switzerland.
| Characteristic | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum download speed | 10 Gbps (shared) |
| Maximum upload speed | 10 Gbps (shared) |
| Sharing | Up to 64 subscribers |
| Practical speed | up to 10 Gbps |
| Notable feature | Symmetrical (same upload/download speed) |
| Status | In deployment |
What does this mean in practice for you?
| BX / GPON | XGS-PON | |
|---|---|---|
| Internet offers up to | 1 Gbps | 10 Gbps |
| Fast upload | Limited | Yes (symmetrical) |
| Equipment compatibility | Wide | Requires XGS SFP |
| Availability | Everywhere | Areas in deployment |
For most users, the difference is not noticeable in everyday use. XGS-PON becomes important for businesses with high upload requirements (intensive video conferencing, cloud backup, servers).
How to find out which technology you have
Your technology depends on the infrastructure Swisscom has deployed in your street or building. MaxiConnect can tell you which technology is available at your address.
Important: If MaxiConnect offers you an XGS-PON plan, your router must be equipped with an XGS-PON-compatible SFP module. Our team handles the configuration.
