10 tips for using less data when roaming

Traveling abroad can quickly drive up your mobile data consumption, especially if you're not careful with your smartphone settings. Here are 10 simple tips to reduce your data consumption while staying connected.

1. Disable automatic updates

Your smartphone's applications and system perform regular updates by downloading large files. Remember to disable these updates by activating the "Update only via Wi-Fi" option.

2. Use "Data reduced" mode

Many smartphones have a mode for limiting background data consumption. Activate this option in your phone's settings.

3. Favoring Wi-Fi connections

Whenever possible, connect to a secure Wi-Fi network. Hotels, restaurants and public places often offer free access.
4. Download content before you leave

Before you leave, download your maps, playlists, series and documents in offline mode. This way, you'll avoid using your data for streaming or browsing.

5. Disable background applications

Some applications continue to use data even when you're not using them. On iOS or Android, you can limit background data usage via the settings of each application.
6. Use a VPN with data compression

Some VPN services compress data before sending it to your device, reducing your roaming consumption.

7. Activate airplane mode and use Wi-Fi

If you don't need to be reachable by call, activate airplane mode and use Wi-Fi only. This will prevent inadvertent connections to the mobile network.

8. Use an eSIM or local SIM card

If you travel frequently, it may be more economical to buy an eSIM or local SIM with a data plan adapted to your destination country.

9. Adjust streaming video quality

High-definition videos consume a lot of data. Switch to standard quality (480p) or use the offline mode of streaming platforms.

10. Deactivate automatic synchronization

Your applications (e-mail, photos, cloud backups) often synchronize data automatically. Deactivate this option or set it to work over Wi-Fi only.

Conclusion

By applying these tips, you can reduce your roaming data consumption and avoid unpleasant surprises on your bill. And if you're looking for a mobile package that includes data in Europe, take a look at MaxiConnect's MyMobile Classic offers, which allow you to travel with complete peace of mind!
