The different types of Internet connection: What you need to know

Today, a reliable Internet connection is essential for businesses and individuals alike. However, not all connections are created equal, and it's important to understand the different options available to choose the one that best suits your needs. At MaxiConnect, we offer a range of connections to suit every need.

1. ADSL connection

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology for connecting to the Internet via a conventional telephone line. Although ADSL is one of the oldest technologies, it is still widely used, particularly in rural areas.

Advantages: Easy installation, wide coverage, generally low costs.
Disadvantages: Limited download speed, distance from telephone antenna affects connection quality.

2. Fiber optic connection

Fiber optics is the fastest technology available today. It uses glass or plastic wires to transmit data in the form of light, enabling extremely high data rates.

Advantages: Very fast connection speeds (up to several gigabits per second), exceptional stability, ideal for video streaming, gaming, or businesses requiring high bandwidth.
Disadvantages: Coverage still limited in some areas, installation costs can be high.

Types of optical fiber
There are several variants of optical fiber:

FTTH (Fiber to the Home): Fiber arrives directly at the home, offering the best performance.
FTTB (Fiber to the Building) : Fiber arrives at the building, then is distributed via copper cables to the apartments.
BX vs XGS-PON: Different fiber optic standards, as explained in our knowledge base, with differences in speed and infrastructure costs.

3. VDSL connection

VDSL (Very-high-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) is an improvement on ADSL. It offers higher speeds than ADSL, but is limited by the distance between the user and the antenna.

Advantages: Faster speeds than ADSL, good alternative in areas not covered by fiber.
Disadvantages: Distance remains an important factor affecting connection speed and quality.

5. 4G / 5G connection (mobile Internet)

4G and 5G are mobile connection solutions, enabling Internet access via a cell phone network. These technologies are ideal for users on the move or in areas without access to fiber or ADSL.

Advantages: Total mobility, good coverage in Switzerland with high connection speeds (especially for 5G).
Disadvantages: Data limitation (depending on subscription), dependence on mobile network coverage.

How do you choose the right Internet connection for your business or home?

Choosing the best Internet connection depends on several factors:

Speed required : If you use a lot of bandwidth (streaming, videoconferencing, gaming), fiber or 5G are the best options. For more moderate use, ADSL or VDSL may suffice.
Local availability : Not all technologies are available everywhere. Check fiber or VDSL coverage in your area.
Specific needs : If you're a company with many users or specific requirements (such as frequent teleconferencing or server hosting), a dedicated fiber connection may be essential.
