Why does a VoLTE smartphone work with one operator… but not another?
Your phone is VoLTE-compatible but it doesn't work with your operator? That's neither a bug nor a coincidence. The explanation lies in operator profiles embedded in the device firmware.
With the end of 3G in Switzerland, VoLTE (Voice over LTE) has become essential for making calls.
And yet, one situation keeps coming up:
“My phone is VoLTE-compatible, but it doesn’t work with my operator!”
No, it’s neither a bug… nor a coincidence. It comes down to the operator profile inside the phone.
The real explanation: operator profiles
Contrary to what many people think, VoLTE does not depend solely on the phone or the network.
To work, the smartphone must contain a profile specific to each operator.
This profile includes:
- IMS parameters
- VoLTE / VoWiFi configurations
- network rules specific to the operator
Without this profile → ❌ VoLTE does not activate.
Who is responsible?
It is not the operators who directly block the phones.
In reality:
- The operator contacts the manufacturers
- It requests the integration of its profile
- The manufacturer must:
- develop the profile
- test it
- validate it
- deploy it via a software update
And that… can take time. A lot of time.
Why doesn’t it work straight away?
Because on the manufacturer’s side:
- Operator requests queue up
- Priorities go to large markets
- Technical validations take a long time
- Firmware updates are not instantaneous
Result: a phone can be VoLTE-compatible… but not yet support a given operator.
The case of end-of-life devices (EOL)
This is the point nobody explains.
If a smartphone is end of life (EOL):
- No more updates
- No new operator profiles
- No further evolution
❌ So even if the operator comes later… the phone will never be VoLTE-compatible with it.
Concrete example
A model released in 2020:
- Profile integrated for certain operators → ✅ works
- Operator that arrived later → ❌ never integrated
And yet, the phone is “VoLTE-compatible” on paper.
What about imported phones?
Same problem:
- Different firmware
- Missing operator profiles
- Updates not adapted to Switzerland
Result: VoLTE often unavailable, even when everything seems compatible.
Why is it so complex?
Because VoLTE is not fully standardised in practice:
- Each operator has its own specifics
- Each manufacturer implements it differently
- Each model has its own lifecycle
A genuine industrial puzzle.
The MaxiConnect approach
At MaxiConnect, we actively work with manufacturers to:
- ✔ Get our profiles integrated into as many devices as possible
- ✔ Accelerate VoLTE / VoWiFi compatibility
- ✔ Ensure the best possible experience
But we stay transparent: some limitations are not up to us — they depend on the manufacturers.
What to remember
- VoLTE requires an operator profile in the phone
- This profile is integrated by the manufacturer, not the operator
- Updates take time
- EOL phones will never be updated again
- Not all phones will therefore be compatible everywhere
Conclusion
Your phone is not “incompatible”. It simply doesn’t have yet… or will never have… the necessary profile.
And as long as manufacturers keep control over these profiles: this problem will continue to exist.
