How to cancel your current telecom contract in Switzerland

Switching to MaxiConnect means cancelling your current contract first. Follow our step-by-step practical guide to avoid common pitfalls, hidden fees and unnecessary delays.

You have decided to join MaxiConnect? Great. But before or during your migration, you will need to terminate your current contract. Here is how to proceed effectively.

Step 1: check your current contract

First of all, locate your contract or general terms and conditions and check:

  • Is there a minimum commitment? If so, until when?
  • What is the cancellation notice period? (often 30 days, sometimes 60 or 90)
  • Are there early termination fees? And how much are they?
  • Is the equipment rented or purchased? If rented, it will need to be returned.

This information can be found in your contract, your general terms and conditions, or in your online customer account.

Step 2: choose the right time to cancel

If you are under a commitment, two options are available to you:

Option A: wait until the end of the commitment The simplest. Calculate the end date and send your cancellation in compliance with the notice period.

Option B: cancel before the end Calculate whether the savings made with MaxiConnect offset the exit penalties. Sometimes it is worthwhile from the very first month.

Note: your subscription often renews automatically for a new period at the end of the commitment. If you do not cancel before the deadline, you are locked in for another period.

Step 3: draft your cancellation letter

Cancellation must generally be done in writing. Some operators now accept online or telephone cancellations, but a written record is always preferable.

Elements to include:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your address
  • Your customer or contract number
  • The line(s) to be cancelled (with the relevant numbers)
  • The desired cancellation date
  • If you wish to port your number to MaxiConnect, state this

Send by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt to have proof.

Step 4: coordinate with MaxiConnect

If you wish to keep your number (porting), coordination is important:

  1. Do not cancel before MaxiConnect has initiated the porting
  2. MaxiConnect initiates the porting request
  3. A transfer date is set
  4. On that date, your number switches to MaxiConnect
  5. The old contract ends automatically as part of the porting process

Important: as part of a porting, you generally do not need to send a separate cancellation letter — the porting counts as cancellation with your previous operator.

Step 5: return the equipment if necessary

If you have a rented router, box or set-top box, return it within the stipulated timeframe after your cancellation to avoid additional fees. Keep the return slip or postal receipt as proof.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Do not cut off your old line before the new one is activated
  • Do not throw away your old equipment before confirming that return is not required
  • Keep all proof (emails, letters, acknowledgements of receipt)
  • Check your final bill to ensure there are no unexpected charges
